After three weeks of arguing we have a Speaker of the House. On the same day we have another mass shooting. This time in Maine and it is being reported that 18 people are dead but those numbers seem to change. It is almost like I don’t want to log into my computer to find out what is happening in America. Hate, Racism, Violence, those are the things that are dominating the news. In Florida, our Governor is banning all Palestinian organizations from our campuses. Free speech is not a thing in Florida. I guess neither is the right to assemble. Biden seems to be delivering the goods that are working but that is not what dominates that news. The Republican led House has been described as a clown show pretty much since they took control. To me that is an insult to clowns. I grew up watching Bozo’s Circus and our Congress is nothing like what I watched.   Bozo was entertaining and made us laugh. Believe it or not there was always an inspirational message that went along with the program
I get confused. I grew up in a Conservative Republican household in the 50s and the 60s. My father was a staunch Goldwater supporter. I look back on those days and I don’t see where the Conservative and the Liberals were that much different. Because of the Vietnam War and Civil Rights it was a complicated time but not near as complicated as it is today. The War divided the nation not by political party but by those that opposed the war and those that wanted to stop the threat of Communism. Race also divided the nation. I have seen riots in the streets during every decade of my life. Back in the 60s most Republicans were not racist or segregationist. I won’t say that Republicans only led the fight against discrimination but they were willing to stand up and be counted when the time came. More Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than Democrats. One of the leading voices was a Conservative from Ohio, Republican Rep. William McCulloch. He really didn’t have much to gain be
I am going to start this by saying, “Israeli lives matter”. I am then I am going to say, “Palestinian lives matter”. Why? Because I truly believe that. I also believe Black lives matter. I also believe that White lives matter. I have never thought when I said that Black lives matter that White lives didn’t matter. To say “all lives matter” is a given but it doesn’t address that problem of the killing of innocent Black people or any minority. It doesn’t address the problem of children being separated from their families. If you can’t say that Black Lives Matter than guess what? I don’t think Black lives do matter to you. If you can’t say that Palestinian Lives Matter than guess what? Palestinian’s lives don’t matter to you either. If you can’t say that Jewish Lives Matter than guess what? Jewish lives don’t matter to you. I can say all four and more. You see all life really does matter but the world is segregated by many things and we have to understand that segregation. I just can’t
Bill Gate has made headlines again. Bill Gates, in my opinion, is one of voices on climate change. When he said that there is an overreaction to climate change the headlines made it sound like he has made an about face and has turned into a climate change denier. After reading the article he really was not saying the climate change was a hoax. The one statement he made was “the world was going to be ok”. I have said that many times myself. The world is going to be around until our sun destroys us. Nuclear War, Climate Change, another Ice Age, none of those things is going to stop the world from spinning on her axis or from circling the sun. Over the millions and millions of years of this planet’s existence it has change many times and the dominate species has also changed many times.   In the article Bill Gates does mention that it is our existence on this planet that is in jeopardy. I too have said the same thing. Whenever there is a crisis there is an opportunity to solve that cr
“War, huh, (good God ya’ll), what is it good for?” That is the start of the lyrics to a song that was popular when I was in High School. Vietnam was going strong and so were the protests.   This song has been stuck in my head for most of my life. For the last week it has been running through my mind like I was still in my buddy’s car, we are driving down hwy 32 and singing it at the top of our lungs. It almost seems like all these years we have been just running in place. After all these years it is like we are still on the “eve of destruction” to steal a phrase from another song.   Children are dying. I don’t care what nationality they are I am just appalled that they are dying. Israeli, Palestinian, Ukrainian I don’t care. It is appalling that they are being used as pawns in war. The situation in the Middle East was started by a terrible terrorist attack on Israel by the terrorist group, Hamas. From what I can tell they didn’t care who they killed. Their goal was to terrorize not
Civilians are dying in Israel and the Gaza Strip. There is a lot of finger pointing going on about who is to blame. Republicans want to blame Biden, Democrats and Republicans want to blame Iran. It is hard to separate the lies from the truth. Just like everything else today if you don’t do your research you will just be swamped with misinformation. People are dying but everyone is playing politics. Some of the people that are dying are Americans. I have now seen a report in The Times of Israel that Egypt had given them advance warning that something big was going to happen but they were basically ignore and were concentrating on the West Bank instead Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Whatever the truth is, one thing is certain, peace is a long way off in the Middle East. I am not expert on the Middle East but just like everything I don’t want to be told what the truth is. I will look for it. One of the first pieces of garbage is that Biden financed this by giving money to Iran. I looked tha
I wrote about the 14th Amendment. A lot of other people have also written about the 14 th Amendment. I think that is it easy to figure out why the 14 th amendment has been a popular subject.     I think, eventually,   it is going to come before the Supreme Court. My problem is that I don’t trust the Supreme Court and I think that there are a lot of people that think just like me. I look at some of the decisions they have made in the last 20 years and I can’t believe that they are looking at the same document that I am looking at. The first one was their decision on the 2 nd Amendment. This court has created a new phrase that was not there when I was growing up. That phrase is “Constitutional Carry”. I look at the 2 nd Amendment and I don’t see it saying “Constitutional Carry” in it. Here is the 2 nd Amendment: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. Does this sound like
OK, back to the 14 th Amendment. The 14 th Amendment   is considered one of the Reconstruction Amendments to the Constitution enacted in 1868. One of the things that it addressed was the citizen rights and equal protection under the law in response to the formerly enslaved Americans following the Civil War. The amendment was bitterly contested by the defeated former States of the Confederacy which had to ratify it to regain representation in Congress. The first section is one of the most litigated parts to the Constitution from segregation, abortion and same sex marriage. The second section on the 14 th amendment is the appointment of Representatives, about who is eligible to vote   and shouldn’t   be denied,   except those that participated in rebellions or other crimes. It is section 3 of the 14 th Amendment that what interests me the most. That section states “No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any o
