This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. Monday, a day of remembrance for all those that have served and passed away and for all those that have died protection our Constitution. Some of us will be taking advantage of the weather to get a jump on summer. Yet some of us will remember those that have come before us to insure the safety of our democracy. Not only do we need to thank the military, but also all the first responders that have come to our aid when we need them. This Memorial Day we should remember those members of the Capital Police force that fought to save our democracy from the domestic terrorism that threatened our democracy and still does threaten it. When our Capital was attacked for the first time since the War of 1812 they were the ones that rushed to defend it. It was their acts of bravery that saved the lives of many of the politicians that would now deny their acts if bravery. On Monday I will say a silent thank you to those that have truly stood up for America an
We the People. Those are the first three words to the Preamble of our Constitution. They are written boldly and big so you know who this document is for. The ability to write this document was the freedom that we had won from the British. There was no other country in the world that was going to do what we were. A government by the people, for the people. No Kings or Nobility, just the people deciding on how they wanted to be governed.   Now they did not have a blueprint to follow so you can say that they debated and made it up as they went along. They had a vision of what they wanted for the newly formed country and went about putting it down on paper. The end result was the Constitution of the United States of America. Every policeman, soldier, judge, politician and civil servant has sworn an oath to protect and defend that document.   As we are now seeing those oaths are just words that were said that really have no meaning to the people saying them. A Branch of our Government w
This morning I was drinking a cup of coffee at my favorite joint along the intercoastal waterway. The sun was just coming up and I always like to take a picture of it and post on Facebook. I am amazed by all the beauty that is around me, as I was sitting there a shrimp boat came down the waterway returning to port. Then a pod of about 6 dolphins passed by, probably following the shrimp boat. It is such a wonderful scene and a great way to start the day. Usually when I am sitting there with my little pup Zoe I will try and catch up with what Heather Cox Richardson has posted on Facebook the evening before and put down a little reply. Her postings are like a history lesson that we all should read. What a great way to start a day. Maybe that is why I am so passionate about what I write. I worry that future generation will not have the ability to enjoy the world as I see it now. My hope is that my great great grandchildren can enjoy the same scene that I am enjoying now. Will it happen
It has been a tough 5 years. Not only for the country but for many families as well. Just like the Civil War where at times you had not only North fight South but you had at times brother fighting brother for the soul of our nation.   The same can be said today. Not only do we have a battle going on between Democrats and Republicans we have a battle going on between Pro Democracy and Anti Democracy ideology. People that I have grown up admiring have shown me a streak of hate that as a younger man I would have never believed was there. Was I just naïve? Growing in up in the 60s and finishing High School in 71 I thought that racism would become a thing of the past. I thought that I didn’t know any racist and working in an integrated setting I saw no problem with all of us working together. I worked with Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Philippinos and Women. I thought that we were really building a better world. What in the hell happened? The easy way to say that the problem is Trump and t
Why do we need a Green Economy? The main reason may be survival. I am pretty sure that a Green Economy is the economy of the future. As the world evolves so must the economics. The fight for the survival of our planet could be a very profitable one for the people that really grasp the concept of a green economy. We can either cling to our old ideas of abusing the world we live in or we can be a leader in transforming the world we live in. The United States used to be leaders; I just feel that that is not as true today as it was in the past. Clinging to old ideas and technologies from the past is just making us fall farther behind. For 22 years I worked for a copper fabrication company. When I started it was called Anaconda American Brass. Everything was old, dirty and hot. It was quite an eye opening experience for that 18 year kid. This was in 1971 and I do not believe at the time that there was a speck of post World War II equipment. Now, if you remember from your history books,
I keep posting on Twitter that the lying has to stop. Now, there is lying and there is being wrong. Lying is saying that the insurrection was just a bunch of tourist. Being wrong is thinking by selling more offensive weapons to Israel can bring about peace. See the difference between the two statements? The first one is to cover up the criminal behavior of the insurrectionist and your political party. The other is an error of judgment to show your support for Israel. The lying that we have experienced in the last 5 years is just astonishing. “The election was stolen.”   “The virus is a hoax.” “It will be gone by April.”   All those were lies. Those lies did great harm to the nation. Some of them cost people’s lives. It did not help that the other side was a little over zealous in attacking the President but they were right. The virus was a danger to this county, and the world. His lack of reaction cost not only American lives but lives around the world. If the Democrats had taken a
I was at a party a couple of years ago and I was in a conversation with another person. One of the other guests was eavesdropping on the conversation that I was having   He kept on say the only thing important was freedom. It really didn’t add anything of substance to the conversation and I thought it was strange that he was thinking that he was adding something meaningful. The only thing important is freedom? What in the hell does that mean? It took me a long time to figure out that in reality what it meant was that he really didn’t have anything constructive to add to the conversation so he would just throw out that statement to try and sound like some patriot. I am old enough that when I went to school they actually taught history. They taught us what the freedom that our forefathers were fighting for. Do you think they were fighting for the freedom to own a gun? Well you would be wrong. They already had the freedom to own a gun. Our revolution was fought with guns that people a
Jan 6 th 2021 will be a day that I believe will live in our history books just like Pearl Harbor and 9/11. Many people will try and play it down but I believe that history will view it as a serious attack on our Democracy. Why am I so certain it will be remembered? All the digital evidence will survive for future generations to study and learn from. This is not like books and paper that you can hide or burn. The digital evidence is all over and shared worldwide. If Jan 6 th was successful and a branch of our government was overthrown history would write about the end of Democracy in America. Here again the digital evidence would be shared worldwide. I hate to have to tell you this but America is not the only country that writes about world history. You may try and censor us here but you cannot censor the world. Right or wrong Liz Chaney will probably be remembered as a defender of Democracy. The stand that she has taken against Trump and his role in the insurrection should be com
I saw a post on Twitter where Donald Trump said that if he was a Democrat he would be on Mount Rushmore .now I am 67 years old and I have never heard a President or former President say such a thing. In fact I was shocked that someone would be so arrogant to even suggest that they belonged up there. Let’s take a look at who is on Mount Rushmore. First there is George Washington the so called “Father of our Country”. He was the man who led our army during the Revolutionary War. Our First President of the United States. One of our so called Founding Fathers. Yes, I know he was a slave owner but slavery was legal in all 13 colonies. He was not a perfect man but who is? He was still a great man that along with many of our founding fathers had a vision for the United States. Second there is Thomas Jefferson the writer of the Declaration of Independence. He was also one of our Founding Fathers and was the 3 rd President of the United States. He also negotiated the Louisiana Purchase w
I have called myself an independent voter for over 20 years now. Before that I voted Republican. Even though I cannot bring myself right now to vote for a Republican I will still remain an Independent in hopes that a Republican comes around that is worth of my vote. The party of Eisenhower was the party of my father. The vision of that party reflects the vision that I still have. The problem with that vision is the people that mostly resemble that vision are Democrats.  One of the biggest problems with any Republican Candidate is, whatever they say once they get to Washington they represent the party and not the district that they came from. It would be nice to be able to elect an individual instead of a party. The Democrats do not seem near as party dominated by one culture. Look at AOC, see speaks her mind and she has a vision of how she wants to help the people she represents. I may not always agree with her but she has stuck to her beliefs that she brought with her to Washingto
Misinformation is what is driving our country apart. I know that and you know that too. The internet can be a great tool for fighting misinformation but is also a tool to use to spread misinformation. Misinformation has been a powerful tool to try and subvert our elections. It has also been used to attack the credibility of whistle blowers such as the case of Christine Blasey one of the accusers of Brent Kavanaugh. Misinformation is used to make sure we do not make the right decision. Who benefits? Not the people of the United States unfortunately. In the 2016 there was a ton of misinformation trying to and in my mind successfully influencing our presidential election. Our own intelligence agencies stated that there was Russian interference in the election. What was the President’s reaction? To do nothing. To say he believed Putin over our own intelligence agencies. He had a chance to be the protector of our democracy instead he did nothing so it could happen again. He had a real c
Rewriting history get a lot of attention and press. What most people don’t realize is, that is, what is supposed to happen. As our knowledge evolves on a certain subject in history so will how it is written. I once told a friend at breakfast that no matter how hard you try to spin history, history will eventually get it right. It may take time but eventually the politicians must give way to the actual historians.  Let’s take the Civil War as one example. In many ways past history has tried to paint the Southern cause as a noble cause. The South wanted to preserve their way of life. The South wanted to preserve their economic system. It makes it seem like the war was fought for very noble causes by very noble men. We are not about 160 years away from that war and there have been many arguments on what the war was actually fought over. Yes, the Civil War was fought to persevere the South’s economic system that unfortunately was based on one crop, cotton. It was a very labor intensive
