Militias have a long history. They are the purpose of the 2 nd amendment and have a history here before the writing of the Constitution. It is a no brainer to figure out during the establishing and founding of the various colonies that they needed protection from the Native Americans that were already there. It is just common sense that you are safer and less vulnerable in groups than you are alone. There is, what I would consider, a very fine line where a militia can become a mob. One of the main functions of militias from the beginning was the suppression of minorities whether it is Indians or slaves.   A well regulated State militia is part of our Constitution since the writing of the Bill of Rights. It was argued that militias could be used to defend States from a tyrannical government, insurrection and defense from invasion. That sounded really good but it really didn’t work real well in real life. Untrained men running around with gun without any real direction just proved t
This is my continuation of my exploration of the Second Amendment of the Constitution. If you have read my last posting you will know what I had discovered. I still believe that it is the most twisted sentence in the Constitution.   In my last writing I discovered what was called the Slave Patrol Militia. It is debated whether   these Slave Patrol Militias were that first actual police departments of the South and maybe the whole country. New York City had the very first Police Department in 1844 with most of the major cities following suite. Most of the major cities in the North had Police Departments pre-civil war. A lot of the South did not follow the trend that I can see. I would suspect that they already had a sort of police in the form of their Slave Patrols. Atlanta did not have its first police Department until 1873. The North feared crime from immigrants and the South feared insurrection from the slaves. Gun control has been imposed and debated since   before the Republi
I have stated many times that the Second Amendment to the Constitution is the most twisted sentence in the Constitution. It is just one sentence. Most people call it “the right to bear arms”. Well, it does say that but that is not all that it says.   But, most people including many in our courts just skip over the first part of the sentence and pretend it does not exist.    The Amendment reads “ A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. You see just one sentence that has been twisted into what we have today. It is such a big topic that this will probably take a couple of postings to cover. Why are the Bill of Rights amendments, as they are called, added to the Constitution and not in the main document? They are put there as a series of compromises to the original Constitution so it would be ratified by all the States. To say that the founding fathers put it there is a false st
The first ten Amendments our Constitution are calling the Bill of Rights. We always talk about a person’s rights that are guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Some people will call it the free speech amendment. Some people will call it the freedom of religion amendment. Some people will call it the right to protest amendment. It is all that and more. The First Amendment states on religion that Congress shall make no laws respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. To me that means that like many Americans saying that we are a Christian nation is just plan false. The very First Amendment to the Constitution says we are not. I have heard many people say that our government is based in Christianity. The first Amendment says that we are not to be based on any religion. To me it says that we should be free from the biases that are created by any religion. It also tells me that it will not interfere with the establishment of a relig
There has been severe flooding along the East coast especially is South Carolina and Georgia. Storm surge and high tides take much of the blame but one thing that should be entering into the conversation is the rising seas. Since the start of the Industrial Age till now the oceans have raised 8 inches and that rate appears be accelerating. They are predicted to rise another 2 feet or more by the end of the century. We need to start being a little more concerned about what we are doing to the planet that we are slowly destroying. Since 2000 28 tropical and subtropical have hit Louisiana alone with 7 since 2020. To me they appear to be increasing in number. Rising seas and more tropical and subtropical storms is not a good idea and all of our coastal areas along the East coast and gulf are going to suffer. We need to wean ourselves off of fossil fuel and climate change is one of the biggest reason but not the only reason. The fossil fuel companies have too much power over our economy
Why would anyone vote Republican today? I look at the people in the Republican Party and I do not see a single person that I would want to run the country. We are a country that is very divided. Would you keep the dividers in power? Trump divided the country. Every other president that I have seen in my 68 years worked to unite the country. He declared the Democrats the enemy of the people. He lost the popular vote so, in reality, over half the voters were the enemy of the people.   Marjorie Taylor Greene declares the Democrats the enemy of the people. People that want a strong united America don’t talk like that. I can tell you that I don’t like a couple of my neighbors but I would never consider then the enemy of the people. Feeding the peoples hate with lies and insults is not a way to make America strong. Never has been and never will be. In fact all the lying and misinformation from the Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene has done more to weaken our democracy and has strengt
Our Judicial System is looking like a joke. When we are young we were told that the Judicial System was a search for the truth. The truth now does not seem to matter to the courts at all. Now those courts are used to suppress the truth and hide it from the public that has a right to know. We are supposed to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. Too many times the innocent are the dead ones and the guilty are made out to look like the victims. Kyle Rittenhouse is not a victim. The people in the Arbery case are not victims. These were men carrying guns to invoke vigilante law. Rittenhouse was not even old enough to be caring the gun that he used to kill two men. The Judge has ruled that the dead men are not allowed to be called victims. Why? Because they were not supposed to be there in the first place because they were violating a curfew? So the Judge in reality convicted two dead men of a crime without a trial and without a chance to defend themselves. Are you trying to tell
First comes the bigotry. Second comes the hate. Third comes the violence. I may have the first two mixed up but violence is the result. The first two explains the violence. Why are so many embracing the violence? When Charles Manson planned the Tate and Labianca murders according to the book Helter Skelter his ultimate goal was to create a race war that he and his family would become victorious. He wanted to use race. Does that sound familiar? What is White Supremacy?   I of course Googled it and there is a whole bunch on the subject. The main thing is that Whites should have dominance over other backgrounds, especially where they co-exist. To some, whites should live by themselves in a white-only society. White people believe that their own culture is superior to other cultures. Many believe that white people are genetically superior to other people. Many of the White Supremists believe that the white race is in danger of extinction due to a rising flood of non-whites, who are con
I will start this out by saying if you ask me if I have been vaccinated I will just say “YES”. I will not try to fool you like some people and say that I have been immunized. When someone asks you if you have been vaccinated they are asking because one, they are curious and two, they want to feel safe around you. If anybody asks me that question I will always answer “yes”. Why, because the safety of the people around me is important. By being vaccinated I feel that I just may be helping save lives and the life that I save may be a love one or a neighbor. I have been a lifelong Green Bay Packer Fan. I greatly enjoyed the 60s with the great Lombardi teams. I suffered with them through the 70s and 80s. I got to enjoy the wisdom of Ron Wolfe what he brought to the team that has continued on to today.   I have loved the rollercoaster ride of Bret Favre of one success and then all the near misses. He was a gunslinger with the football which was always entertaining. I got to agonize on th
Voter suppression and racism go hand in hand. I think that I have written that a thousand times on Twitter. I will write it a thousand times more before the 2022 election. Voter suppression is the most important issue that is facing the country. They talk about the Build Back Better and childcare which are important issues but the most important issue is do we want a Democracy? In my opinion there are a whole lot of folks out there that really don’t. They talk like they do but their actions show us more. To want a Democracy is not about being able to carry a gun. In fact carrying a gun has absolutely nothing to do with Democracy and that is from a gun owner. The thirst for Democracy is what inspired our forefathers to write the Constitution of the United States of America. They knew it was not a perfect document and that it would have to change and grow so they made it possible to change or amend the Constitution.   There have been 27 amendments added to the Constitution. If you wa
Is our Republic done, finished? Ten months after our Capitol was stormed by insurrectionist sent by the outgoing President and the Republican Party they appear to be on the move again. The victory in Virginia was predicted but I am still shocked that people are so willing to support the party that wants to destroy our Republic. What does that say about the midterms? Folks, the bullies are winning. The people that want to see money rule above anything else will destroy or democracy so they can remain in power with their money and never run for office. The lies that have been spread that the public believes is a real problem to me. The first lie is the lie about Critical Race Theory. They want it out of education. The public wants something that is not in education out of our education. That is right. It has never been part of education.   They are being lied to but that is ok as long as that lie helps feed their bigotry and do not try and convince me that it is not bigotry. They wil
Another week and another week of no accountability that I can see.   Trump is still spewing his big lies about the election being stolen and country seems more divided than ever. People are still getting sick and people are still dying. Michael Flynn is still preaching insurrection and Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert are still talking about blowing things up. Steven Bannon still has not been arrested. This is almost like that Bill Murray movie Ground Hog Day. The movie was entertaining but this is getting old and disgusting. It is very hard to be upbeat about the future of our country with everything that is going on. On January 6 th I was at the pool with my friend Larry when he got a call that the Capital Building was under attack. I went back to the condo and immediately turned on MSNBC to see what was going on. What I saw shocked me. Our own citizens attacking a branch of our government to try and overturn our election. As I was watching I was wondering where are the police in b
