We are being told that because Trump won the election, all of us should support him. At least that is what one of his lawyers said. Alina Saad Habba stated that everyone supported Obama when he was elected and should support Trump now. Talking like that really makes me sit up and take notice. Better yet, lying, like that makes me sit up and take notice. It is straightforward to check and see how much support Obama got from the Republican Party and from the Republicans on the Hill in general. America has been known for having a very short memory but when you are 71 years old 2009 seems like just yesterday.
I don't think we have had a Republican Party that wanted to work with a Democratic President since Johnson. All of my life, the political divide has deepened in America to the point where we are today. That "Party Before Country" that Newt Gingrich brought to the Republican Party during the 1990s really pushed me over the edge. His contract with America had nothing to do with the betterment of the country. It was to enhance the power of the Republican Party. After voting for Reagan and Bush, Newt's "Contract with America" is when I stopped voting for a Republican President. In 2000, with Gingrich's help and his "Contract with America," we put in the White House one of the most unqualified candidates I think in our history, George W Bush. We had not one but two unfunded wars. The War in Afghanistan and the War in Iraq. The War in Afghanistan was because of the help that the Taliban had given the 9/11 terrorists, which was in my opinion justified. The War in Iraq was because the Bush Administration lied to the American people and it just plain shouldn't have happened. In fact, I think it was criminal. The Iraq War caused much of the instability in the Middle East that exists today. Toward the end of Bush's eight years in office, we also had one of the worst financial crises in our history.
In 2008 we elected Barack Obama President and what he inherited was a disaster. The Republicans like to talk about mandates when they are elected but when Obama was elected he won by almost 10 million votes, 53 percent of the vote compared to 47 percent for McCain. Just to compare, Trump had 49 percent of the vote to Harris's 48 percent in 2024. Obama inherited a mess. A growing deficit of two unfunded wars and a country in a severe financial crisis. With the country being basically a mess and the fact the people had spoken rather loudly what did the leader of the Republicans say? Mitch McConnel said the Republicans were going to work very hard to make sure Obama was a one-term President. That was not a party that was worried about the state of the country and trying to make things better. That was a political party that only worried about the fact they were no longer in power. The country was a mess and the Republicans were largely responsible for making the mess but they were not in the least interested in working with the new President to fix it. With all of the obstruction that Obama experienced during his eight years, it shows you just how great of a leader he was for rebuilding a broken economy and changing our healthcare system for the better. As far as Trump supporting the then President Obama history will write forever about the birther movement that Trump led to harassing the sitting President. Trump bears a lot of the responsibility for the divisions that exist today.
When it came to Republicans supporting Biden after he won by eight million votes January 6th will be a day that not only lives in US History but will live in World History forever. In today's digital age all the evidence that is now all over the world will live forever for future historians will be able to view it like they are there. In fact, all of our history and all of our legacies will be there forever for our great great grandchildren will see. I have heard the saying, "Victors write the history". That is not true. Historians write history and our understanding of history evolves with more research being done to discover the real facts. In today's digital age, it is going to be harder and harder to hide the real facts. It is called being woke. The Republicans gave no support for Biden's accomplishes but were more than willing to take credit for them. Anyone that talks about all of the support that the Republicans gave both Obama and Biden are just plain lying. Both Presidents were left with a mess from the outgoing Republican administration and both accomplished a lot considering the opposition they faced. I am sure History will get it right.
Believe it or not, I am not a person who pays as much attention to political parties as I am about problems and solutions. Healthcare is a problem that much of the civilized world has solved and we haven't. We are about 23rd on the list of the freest countries in the world and one of the reasons is a healthcare system that entraps people to an employer instead of a system that would follow you in whichever direction that a person chooses to take their life. The income gap and the threat of our government being owned by billionaires scare the hell out of me because billionaires are not concerned about my freedom or well-being at all. Here again, it may make us slaves to a system created for the betterment of those billionaires. When they feel their money should give them a louder voice than the rest of us is another way that our freedoms are diminished. In fact, that is the very system that we revolted against in the 1770s. The corruption of our judicial system concerns me a lot. When the Supreme Court becomes a tool of the suppressor, democracy ends. Our Democratic Republic is a very liberal process that has never been tried quite this way in the history of the world. It was like a great experiment. If it should be changed it should be changed by a constitutional convention and a ratification process and not by a Supreme Court owned by billionaires.
I have seen Democratic Presidents try and work with the other side of the aisle but you really don't see the reverse happen. I know there are Republicans that will tell me that I am full of crap but I bet history says otherwise. My vote over time has gravitated over to the people who are willing to address at least some of my concerns. That party is not the Republican Party.
You are not wrong. Republicans fought Obama every chance they got. My own mother asked me (disgustedly) “you voted for Obama?!” I said, twice. She left the room, when she returned, she said we’d no longer discuss politics, I’m fine with that. She also told me, “Trump was sent by God”, that’s the day I stopped believing in God. I’ve run the gamut of emotions since election night. I’m now resigned to… this shit is gonna suck. However, I, we, Democrats… can breathe easy knowing this has nothing to do with us, not our fault. I’ma rest till next year and wait for the shit show to begin. Deep cleansing breaths… good luck, America.
