The Moment China Told Us We Were Slipping — And We
Agreed.
Every
once in a while, there’s a moment that quietly explains where the world is heading.
One of those moments happened when Donald Trump sat down with China’s President
Xi Jinping. Xi didn’t insult America directly. He didn’t call us weak or washed
up. He didn’t have to. Instead, he used a phrase Trump clearly didn’t
understand: the Thucydides Trap. Like me, most Americans haven’t heard of it.
And honestly, there's no sign that Trump had either. Here’s the simple version:
it’s the old story of a new tough guy rising and the old tough guy getting
nervous. The new guy gets stronger, the old guy gets jumpy, and that fear leads
to bad decisions and fights nobody wanted. That's all it means.
When
Xi brought up the Thucydides Trap, he was basically saying, “China is rising.
America is Slipping. Don’t panic and make it worse.” That was a quiet power
move, the kind of thing world leaders use to put you in your place without
saying it outright. And here’s the part that should bother every American:
Trump didn’t push back. He didn’t defend the country. He didn’t challenge the
idea. Instead, he walked out and told the world that Xi said America is a “declining
nation,” and then Trump said that Xi was “100% right.” Think about that. China didn’t
call us weak. We did it to ourselves. Trump, of course, blamed the Biden administration.
He claimed Xi was referring to that state of the U.S. under Joe Biden, twisting
it to Trump's own talking points, such as high taxes, crime, and social
policies such as DEI and transgender participation in sports. Xi was not
talking about those things. He was talking about our declining standing in the
world.
The
truth is, China’s quality of life is rising, and ours is slipping. That rise isn’t
imaginary. It’s happening in plain sight. In the last 30 years, China has wiped
out extreme poverty. China’s life expectancy is now higher than America’s.
China builds high-speed rail, ports, and power grids while we argue about gas
stoves. China’s middle class has exploded from almost nothing to hundreds of
millions. Meanwhile, America, the richest country on earth, is seeing warning
signs we never expected. U. S. life expectancy is falling. Wages barely move.
Housing is out of reach for many young families. Infrastructure is aging.
Healthcare costs crush people. America is still wealthier overall, but the
trend lines tell the story. China’s quality of life is rising. Ours is drifting
sideways or slipping. That’s the real meaning behind Xi’s little history lesson.
He was telling Trump, “We’re rising. You’re distracted. And instead of
defending America, Trump agreed with him.
Has
Trump’s foreign policy helped China rise faster? Trump talked tough on China. But
many of his decisions, intentional or not, strengthened China’s position and
weakened America’s. These aren’t opinions; they’re outcomes visible in trade
data, global alliances, and economic shifts. The tariff war backfired, and China
came out stronger. Trump’s tariffs were supposed to punish China. Instead, they
punished us. American farmers needed $28 billion in bailout payments. American
consumers paid higher prices. American manufacturers faced higher costs. China
just shifted its supply chains to Southeast Asia and continued to grow. China didn’t
blink. We paid the bill.
Pulling
out of the TPP, the Trans-Pacific Partnership handed the keys to Asia to China.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership was designed to isolate China, strengthen U.S.
influence in Asia, and set global trade rules without Beijing. Trump pulled out
on Day One. Do you know what the result was? The vacuum we left has been filled
by China. Asia moved closer to Beijing. The U.S. lost the leverage that it had
spent decades building. China didn’t outmaneuver us. We just stepped aside.
Weakening
our alliances was not only a gift to Russia. It was also one of the biggest
strategic gifts we could have given China. China’s rise depends on one thing: America
fighting alone. Trump has repeatedly attacked NATO, threatening to pull out. He
has threatened South Korea and Japan with troop withdrawals. He has insulted
Canada, Germany, and Australia. He is in the process of pulling 5000 troops out
of Germany and is threatening to do the same with Italy and Spain. He has constantly
praised authoritarian leaders while criticizing our democratic allies. I bet
the Chinese diplomats couldn’t believe their luck. The U.S. was doing its work
for them.
Trump's mocking of clean energy has helped China dominate the future of green
technology. While Trump has mocked renewable energy, pushing us to be more dependent
on oil. China became the world's #1 producer of solar panels. China has also become
the world’s #1 producer of batteries and the world’s #1 producer of electric
vehicles. These are the industries of the next century. China built them. We
argued about windmills.
“China’s
quality of life is rising because they build. Ours is slipping because we
argue. When Trump repeated China’s line that America is ‘in decline.’ He didn’t
defend the country; he confirmed their story.”
Some
will say that stepping back from global leadership has opened doors for Beijing.
I would like to say that Trump abandoning the role of global leadership has
opened doors for Beijing. When the United States stepped back from climate agreements,
trade partnerships, global institutions, and diplomatic partnerships, it was
the United States abandoning its leadership role. China stepped forward. They
offered loans, infrastructure, and influence through the Belt and Road
Initiative. They positioned themselves as the “responsible adult” in the room. The
world noticed.
There
will be economic consequences of echoing China’s narrative. When Trump repeated
China’s line that America is “in decline,” it just didn’t bruise our pride. It
will hurt our economy. It shook investor confidence. Global money goes where it
feels safe. If America looks unstable, investors hedge toward China. It strengthens
China’s hand in deals. If the world believes China is the future and America is
the past, countries sign longer contracts with China. It undercuts American workers.
CEOs who already want to offshore jobs suddenly have the perfect excuse: “America
just isn’t competitive anymore.” It has given China exactly what it wanted. China’s
message to the world is simple: “ We’re rising, America is fading.” Trump just
repeated it for them. China didn’t need to humiliate us. We did it ourselves.
Yeah, I think the Thucydides Trap flew over Trump's candy haired head. I watch a few YouTube videos from people who live in China. Unless it's all B's there are plenty of people living in poverty. They remain hidden. They work long hours for little pay and they use a special router to use YouTube because they can't speak out against their leader. We still have that option. Hopefully, we'll learn something from this nightmare.
