Militias have a long history. They are the purpose of the 2nd amendment and have a history here before the writing of the Constitution. It is a no brainer to figure out during the establishing and founding of the various colonies that they needed protection from the Native Americans that were already there. It is just common sense that you are safer and less vulnerable in groups than you are alone. There is, what I would consider, a very fine line where a militia can become a mob. One of the main functions of militias from the beginning was the suppression of minorities whether it is Indians or slaves.
A well regulated State militia is part of our Constitution since the writing of the Bill of Rights. It was argued that militias could be used to defend States from a tyrannical government, insurrection and defense from invasion. That sounded really good but it really didn’t work real well in real life. Untrained men running around with gun without any real direction just proved to not be a good idea. Their service was short term and desertions were common. The leadership was mostly untrained. It was because of the short comings of the militias that led directly to the strengthening of our Federal Army. The short comings of the militia were very apparent when the British invaded both Washington DC and Maine during the war of 1812. In both cases much of the militia men ran without firing a single shot. The glaring need for good military leadership brought about the creation in West Point in 1801. The war in 1812 proved that for defense of our nation we needed a Federal Army.
As the Indian Wars ended in the early 1800s the need for the militias were transformed into support for law enforcement. One of those groups was the Slave Patrol Militias which did what its name said it did. The Slave Patrol Militias were probably the early versions of a Southern Police force. They did inspections of plantations to ensure that there were not planned slave revolts and also went after runaway slaves. The two things that militia did best was fight against Indians and to suppress Black Slaves. As a real fighting force it did not cut the mustard. In 1903, the Militia Act in reality did away with the militias and replaced them with the National Guard. Most States still have militia laws on the books but the militias all have to be sanctioned by the State and most, if not, all are now gone.
Today what is now called militias are not more than mobs trying to suppress and intimidate people. None are sanctioned by the State or under the control of State Government. They try and convince you that they have a constitutional right to exists but that is only a lie. Their purpose is mostly to undermine the Constitution and force a right wing ideology on the masses. They are not really much different than the White mobs that destroyed Black Wall street In Oklahoma or Rosewood in Florida. Militias that were intended to be for the defense of the States transformed themselves in my opinion into a type of vigilante mob justice.
The purpose of the so called militias is no longer there to protect the State from invasion or from insurrection. They are more like paramilitary groups that are affiliated with a certain political philosophy that is contrary to that of the majority. They are groups that want to intimidate and suppress to get their way. If you believe that these so called militias have a right to exist than why don’t the Black Street gangs or the Hispanic Street gangs have a right to exist. All those two would have to do is a little rebranding and now we have a bigger mess. If we need militias to keeps us safe from minorities maybe minorities need militias to keep them safe from they feel is oppression. Do Blacks have the right to form Militias to protect them from the police? If Whites have the right to form a militia to protect what they feel is the over reach of the Federal Government than why not have Black Militias to protect themselves from the abuses of the police? Personally I think that we should have neither. The Supreme Court has already ruled on that, it is the State that regulates militias so most if not all is illegal.
