Education in Florida. DeSantis is still going at it when it comes to suppressing education. No matter what you call it he is suppressing the education that our students and future workers are going to need in the real world. His attacks on equity, inclusion and diversity training will affect, in my opinion, the ability to function in the real world. I think the most important job of any educational system is to prepare our young people to function in the real world. It is a sad day when our governor signed legislation that is meant to groom our students than make them think.
I often wonder what kind of world DeSantis thinks he is sending these students out into after they graduate. In my opinion he is not wanting to prepare them at all. Does he really think that he can just legislate the idea of racism out of our vocabulary by eliminating the teaching of racial history in America? Is he really that stupid, or, is he really that big of a bigot. For me he is just proving that Critical Race Theory should be taught more now than at any point in our history. You can’t solve the problem of racism until you learn to understand what racism is and how it has affected the development of our nation, the problems that is facing us now, and we will face in the future. Black people are not going away, in most cases their ancestors have been here longer than most of our families. Many of their lineages go back long before the American Revolution. They did not migrate here they were captured and brought here as slaves. They are here because of Anglo Saxon greed for cheap labor. You can say that they should go back to Africa but they are a bigger part of American History than most of my ancestors have been which mostly migrated here in the early 1900. This is their home and we made it their home the minute we stole them away from their families in Africa over 300 years ago and sold them here as slaves.
Our students that will eventually go out into the work force, whether DeSantis likes it or not, will be working in a very diverse place. They could have a Gay boss. They could have a Black boss. They could have a Woman boss. All those things exist in the real world. So why in the hell is DeSantis so dead set about diversity? As the world gets smaller and smaller the more of a need to recognize the diversity of our society that fits into the bigger world. We are more and more dealing with an international market and we need to prepare these students to deal with the international market. We are so arrogant to think that the future revolves around us. China is about 3 times bigger than we are and so is India. People make up the consumer market and India’s and China’s markets are huge. Our young people have got to be trained in that very diverse world that includes many different cultures and beliefs. Disney recognizes that. Look at all of the people from all around the world that visit that park. On any given day you can here dozens of different languages with many different cultures. I think that many businesses recognize that. You can play to the White superiority all you want but that is not going to help us in the long run.
You can say that you don’t care what the rest of the world thinks but if we are going to continue to be the leader of the free world we better start caring. The rest of the world knows what we have done and what we are doing. In today’s digital world there are not many secrets. They know about our Black History probably better than we do. Why? Because history is written by Historians and not by Politicians. No matter who wins the Presidential election that person will never be able to rewrite our history. In today’s digital age is pretty much impossible to undo the truths that have already been written and try to change those truth with lies. Just think about every book in every library where we can access all those books 24/7 around the entire world. Just think of all the news articles that are archived about the reporting of our history while it was happening. Those archives well go back centuries. Just do a Google search for Selma’s Bloody Sunday and just see what you come up with. Our history cannot be just legislated away by signing a bill. By trying to hide our sins it only makes us look like liars to the rest of the world. Liars that can’t be trusted. We cannot lecture other counties about human rights when we deny many the basic rights at home.
Should parents be involved in their children’s education? Of
course they should. Parents play a huge role in their children’s education.
Most of the best educated people I know came from homes where their parents
were involved in their children’s education. They worked with the teachers
making sure that their child was performing up to standards that were being
set. They made sure that every day their child prepared for the classroom and
in a lot of cases wanted to make sure that their child was challenged in the
classroom. Parents should not use their children as some political pawn for
power by any political group. Some parents are doing that in Florida. A Principal was fired in
Florida because the students saw a picture of Leonardo Di Vinci’s sculpture of
David which is one of the most perfect pieces of art ever created. That parent
change the direction of the entire school and did a disservice, in my opinion,
to the entire student body. No parent should be able to object to what is being
taught by any school district that has carefully established a curriculum that will
benefit the future success of the entire student body. A parent that objects to
the fact that their child is learning about the real world and changes that
curriculum for the entire student body is doing a disservice to the entire
student body. If they are so dead set against the teaching of the truth to
students in our schools then maybe them should home school their children?
If you want to look at why other countries are performing better educationally than we are all you have to do is look at the home and the commitment that the home has for education. I was looking at an article in Newsweek from 2021 on the most educated countries in the world and I was not surprised to see that we were ranked 11th. I was not surprised that both South Korea and Japan were ahead of us. The only country that was on the list that was ahead of us that surprised me was Russia.
You make some good points and a persuasive case for reasonable people. That’s where you lose the attention of the Desantises and others are religi committed to supremacy and against anything that does not support that false ideology. He has acted, and been supported by a significant number to pursue the course he is pursuing regardless of harm to his state and country. In my view they’re creating their own reality without regard for any other worldview. Retarding the emotional and social abilities of the students may do incalculable damage to two future generations. To manage and lead, to simply function requires a modicum of acceptance that you and yours is not the only worthwhile entity present. Curating ignorance is a fool’s errand.

DeleteNothing grows in a vacuum. DeSantis is intelligent enough to know this. He understands exactly what he’s doing, and that should be terrifying enough to stop him. But he’s not stopping, which means, IMO, that every terrible possibility we are imagining could become a reality. I know many people understand what he’s planning and we must vote him and all the wolves in sheep’s clothing out and keep them out for the next generation. Our children do not need republicans to save them from their parents and that’s the way they are acting. There is only one way to make sure they really are safe…vote for like-minded politicians who will not fold to dark money.
