Militias have a long history. They are the purpose of the 2 nd amendment and have a history here before the writing of the Constitution. It is a no brainer to figure out during the establishing and founding of the various colonies that they needed protection from the Native Americans that were already there. It is just common sense that you are safer and less vulnerable in groups than you are alone. There is, what I would consider, a very fine line where a militia can become a mob. One of the main functions of militias from the beginning was the suppression of minorities whether it is Indians or slaves. A well regulated State militia is part of our Constitution since the writing of the Bill of Rights. It was argued that militias could be used to defend States from a tyrannical government, insurrection and defense from invasion.
